Spinifex
14. prosince 2023
20:00 - 23:45
Spinifex

Spinifex, the Amsterdam-based band named after a tough Australian grass species, may initially appear to be a fusion of free jazz, punk rock, and other typically Western contemporary styles. However, beneath the surface the listener will discover ancient cyclical rhythms from Turkish and Indian musical cultures.
Dave Foxall (Jazz Journal, UK): “ambitious yet unpretentious, tight, catchy, but also fearlessly exploratory and experimental.”
The group features a roster of exceptional musicians, each renowned for their distinctive contributions to the European improvised music scene. Drummer and astro-physicist Philipp Moser has garnered acclaim for his work with Dutch progressive metal band Cilice, while guitarist Jasper Stadhouders sets the tone in the underground music scenes of both Amsterdam and Berlin. Portuguese, Rotterdam-based bassist Gonçalo Almeida exhibits his versatility by switching effortlessly between a beautifully rounded sound and heavy electric distortion. Meanwhile, tenor saxophonist John Dikeman has astounded audiences with his performances alongside William Parker and Hamid Drake in his trio. Trumpet master Bart Maris is a singular voice in European improvised music and has been active in the scene for several decades. Finally, alto saxophonist Tobias Klein, the driving force behind the ensemble, is renowned not only for his impressive performances on the alto sax but also his virtuosic skill as a bass clarinetist and composer. Together, the members of Spinifex create an electrifying sound that blends an array of musical influences into something altogether unique and thrilling. “This exceptional band gives Free Jazz a new face by both pushing it to new limits and interpreting it anew.” (skug.at)
